To be SEO friendly, it is most important that links be on the right type of web site - which depends upon the kind of site you are promoting, to some extent. SEO friendly links should also be in the appropriate format and have the right sort of title (or "anchor text"). Here some examples representing this type of link:
- A link to a car dealer's web site located on a local business directory, with the anchor text "Local Chrysler/Jeep Dealer".
- Linking to a web site about timepieces from a world time reference page, with the SEO friendly title "About clocks and watches".
- A link to a site offering proofreading services placed on a page about publishing books, with the text "Low-cost Proofreading".
As you can see from these examples, SEO friendly links have descriptive titles and are typically located on pages about similar subjects (preferably containing
popular search keywords). To provide SEO benefits, they also shouldn't use the "nofollow" attribute or open in a framed browser window. The following examples illustrate links which are unfriendly, or only considered partially SEO friendly...
- Linking to a recent article on computer monitors, from a web site about politics and with the title "Recommended link".
- Any link posted to a page full of links on unrelated subjects.
- A reciprocal link to a clothing retailer, placed in the blogroll/sidebar of a blog about cooking and recipes.
- Links titled "Check this out", "Read more", or "Related site".
- Sites listed in the wrong categories of internet directories.
While such links are generally not desirable for SEO, there are exceptions. If you can obtain a link on a related site with vague anchor text like "Click here", it is certainly better than no link at all. Linking with unrelated pages can still be valuable as well, esp. if they are non-reciprocal and appear on popular sites not specific to one subject.
